Naming

Overview:

Lè Ark Arts Center is located in Taitung, Taiwan, housed within a repurposed sugar factory whose architecture has been preserved almost entirely intact. The building carries the weight of its past visibly — in its structure, its rooflines, its materials. Rather than obscure that history, the center was conceived as an extension of it: a space where the culture embedded in the building becomes the foundation for everything that happens on its stages. The name follows directly from this reading. Like an ark, the center carries something forward across time — the dreams of performers and audiences, the ambition of artistic work that refuses to stay in one place. Lè Ark is both a vessel and a destination.

Challenges:

The core design challenge was translating a specific, physical architectural identity into a visual language capable of moving across posters, tickets, signage, and digital applications without losing what made it distinct. The logo resolves this through a single precise construction: the letter A — the brand's initial — built from two overlapping references. The left stroke is a musical crotchet, grounding the mark in performance. The right is drawn directly from the iconic eave of the building's roofline, its geometry carried into the letterform. Music and architecture held in the same shape, without either one announcing itself.

Conclusion:

Orange anchors the color system — chosen for its capacity to carry passion, heat, and a quality of forward momentum. It is the color of ambition before it becomes achievement, of a curtain about to rise. A supporting palette of blue, green, purple, and yellow extends the system's range, giving the brand the flexibility a multi-genre arts center demands: different productions, different audiences, different energy — all within one visual family. The brand motif takes the logo's architectural thinking one step further. The eave detail is abstracted into a serrated, tile-like edge that recurs across tickets, badges, and concert posters. It functions simultaneously as a frame and a signature — immediately legible as Lè Ark, and inseparable from the building that gave it form.
