Overview:

Taipei Percussion Ensemble marks its 40th anniversary not with a look back, but a step forward. The rebrand began with a name decision already made: the ensemble would move from "Taipei Percussion" to simply TPE. The original name carried too much textual weight — as a wordmark, it read as description rather than identity. TPE is leaner, more immediate, and carries the kind of compactness that gives a brand room to grow beyond the language it was born in. The project scope extended beyond the logo. It was about giving a 40-year institution a visual language capable of speaking to the next generation of audiences — with the same force it has always brought to the stage.

Challenges:

The existing brandmark had equity worth preserving. The challenge was not to replace it, but to evolve it — tightening the geometry, clarifying the form, and loading it with a richer symbolic layer. Three ideas were brought into a single mark: the drumstick as the instrument of action, the human element at the center of performance, and the concept of infinity as the enduring nature of rhythm itself. The result is a logo that works visually as a symbol and conceptually as a statement — without needing to explain itself.

Conclusion:

The visual system extends the logo's logic through a brand motif derived from the arc of a drumstick in motion — the trajectory of a strike, captured as a line and woven through the identity as a recurring pattern. It gives the system kinetic energy even in static applications, a visual echo of the physical act of performance. The color direction builds on the ensemble's existing palette rather than replacing it — a deliberate choice that honors continuity while expanding possibility. New supporting colors were introduced alongside the core tones, giving the brand a wider emotional register: the flexibility to shift from the gravity of a formal concert program to the energy of a public campaign, without losing coherence. The result is a palette that doesn't just identify TPE — it performs alongside it. At forty years, TPE enters its next chapter with an identity that carries the weight of its history and the momentum of what comes next.
